Contrary to Care: How Abortion Pills Undermine Actual Healthcare

The fight for preborn life against the adversity of abortion pill access is our new norm in the pro-life movement, and we see women each week who are seeking a way out of hard situations and think abortion will be that way out. Abortion pills are marketed as a means of healthcare by an industry who ironically, cares very little about women's health. Regardless of where a woman lives, including right here in Laurel, with a few quick clicks of a button, she can have the abortion pill, of some concoction unbeknownst to her, mailed to her home in the hopes of resolving her situation without ever telling anyone, seeing a doctor, or even taking a pregnancy test. The abortion industry markets this dangerous mixture of chemicals as something to keep in the medicine cabinet- to just have on hand in in case of future need, even if she isn't currently pregnant. "Safer than Tylenol," they cry, as women flood emergency rooms across the country after taking these deadly medications. 75% of women who go to the ER after taking the abortion pill are deemed to be in severe or critical condition. *
Just last week, we sat across from a client who admitted that she had abortion pills in her Amazon cart before she walked through our doors that day. Who would have told her if and when she should seek medical attention should she take these drugs? What symptoms would she have to have in order to get help? Would it be a fever? Would it be possible hemorrhage? Would it be fainting? What would be her indicator that she should get help from a medical provider since there is no medical oversight happening at any point in this process if she were to submit that Amazon order? The very industry that claims to be for choice and for women doesn't have any answers when faced with the very real reality that her choice may end not only her child's life, but hers as well due to the lack of care and compassion she receives from them.
When women come to an appointment at Choices to get pre-abortion screening services, they are in a state of panic. Shock. Denial. Fear. They almost always know very little about the abortion they think they want, and what they do know rarely scratches the surface about what these drugs are and what they actually do. Whether it be the pressures of a relationship, finances, health concerns, other children in the home, or a plethora of other circumstances, we in the pro-life movement know that abortion is never truly what she wants. She wants security. She wants help. She wants peace. She wants stability. She wants support. She doesn't want to feel as though she's swimming against the current anymore, barely able to hold her head above water... and so she reaches out for rescue in the form of a magic pill to make it all disappear. But what we also know, from listening to women who are now walking on the other side of this devastating decision, is that all those things she sought rescue from are still there, and not only still present, but heightened by so much more. Guilt. Shame. Remorse. Grief. Not one single thing that the abortion industry promises do they deliver, but any institution built on the basis of death as their definition of success cannot and will not ever be the place she can seek for true support.
That's why we exist; to be a source of truth, a soft place to land, a voice of reason in her life when all else is bombarding her with careless conclusions that won't help but will always hurt. We do this day in and day out, never forgetting the inherent value, worth, and dignity of each woman who sits across from us. We see her, we hear her, and we know that when we meet her where she is, seeking to give to her rather than take from her, she will ever so slowly be able to begin seeing her situation in a different light- one in which both she and her child can grow and flourish and thrive. The medical services we provide, the listening ear we give, and the power of the Holy Spirit are what makes all the difference. We invite Him into every aspect of this ministry, and we let Him do the work of cultivating life in the hearts of our clients. We tell her the truth. We love her in whatever situation she finds herself in. We show her the beauty of the life inside of her through ultrasound. And we let Him work. As the Author of life and the Great Physician, He knows compassion. He knows healthcare. He knows hearts, and He has the power to change them.
Abortion pills harm. They steal, kill, and destroy... and that sounds much like someone else we know. The abortion industry has no concern for care; they seek only to twist the truth just enough so that vulnerable women indulge in the fruit of abortion, unknowingly stumbling into more bondage than into the freedom they were promised. We have a very real enemy, and he has exploited unexpected pregnancies as the irrevocable, unredeemable problem to be solved rather than person(s) to be loved. We covet your prayers as we continue showing up for the women God brings us- one situation at a time, one day at a time, one life at a time. The battle we're in is very real and very difficult, but we rest assured that our victory has already been won.
